Since 2014, the Kutumb Foundation has implemented school-based intervention programmes in government schools across Delhi and Noida. Building on this experience, we introduced drama-in-education classes in underserved village schools in Noida from 2018-2023.
These sessions use dramatic conventions and theatre-based methods to help children explore the relationship between family, community, and the environment. Aligned with the foundational literacy competencies outlined under NIPUN Bharat, drama-in-education is uniquely positioned as a holistic, play-based, discovery-oriented, and activity-driven pedagogy. It enables primary school children to develop foundational literacy skills while simultaneously strengthening their socio-emotional learning.
Through the programme, students collaboratively create plays around these themes, and their work is documented through videos that showcase their learning and creative expression. Drama-in-education also serves as a powerful medium to question and challenge existing power structures—particularly patriarchy and unequal gender relations—by encouraging critical thinking and problem-posing approaches rather than rote memorisation.
