Sports for Change Beyond Football: OVEP - Practicing Respect in Daily Life

SPORTS FOR DEVELOPMENT

Sport, when delivered with intention and by trained facilitators, plays a powerful complementary role to classroom learning—yet it remains widely underutilised within formal education systems. The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) highlights the lack of access to play and sports as a key barrier to student well-being, particularly noting the exclusion of older children and girls from sports participation. It further emphasises that children who show interest or talent in sports must be provided meaningful opportunities, as participation in sports is essential for psycho-social development and represents “knowledge in practice,” a cornerstone of holistic education.

Football offers an effective and inclusive platform to channel young people’s energy, nurture latent talent, and create safe spaces for girls and young women to challenge restrictive gender norms. Building on this approach, Sports for Development integrates structured life-skills education into football-based programming, using the internationally recognised Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) framework.

Goal of Life is Kutumb’s flagship Sports for Development initiative, designed to support the physical, emotional, and social development of children and youth. In partnership with Coaches Across Continents, we are strengthening the programme by integrating modules on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Kutumb’s Sports for Development work has been supported over the years by the Public Affairs Section, U.S. Department of State, Toyota Financial Services, HCL Foundation, and numerous individual donors. CSR partnerships in this area enable scalable, high-impact interventions that advance national education goals while fostering inclusive, resilient, and empowered communities.
